Geotextile Ground Preparation

Your ready to start your DIY project, lets make sure your base layers are prepared correctly. Adding geotextile to your sub base is a great way to add longevity to your project. Just be sure it’s done properly.

Geotextile fabric wether woven or non-woven can add to the stability and strength of your sub base. Non-woven will help with filtration while woven will help suppress weeds and provide a higher loading capacity.

How do I lay the geotextile?

Geotextile Installation Procedure

  • Firstly remove any greenery, trees, and then remove any stones/rocks. Make sure any these items are clear at least 30cm down.
  • Any gaps or hole areas make sure are filled.
  • Grade and level the area
  • Now the area is clear and level you are ready to lay out your geotextile layer.
  • Roll or unfold the fabric out to cover the area.
  • If you have to reposition or cut make sure you have sharp knife to cut and a helper to move it about.
  • Keep the geotextile taught and as close to the surface as possible.
  • Keep any edges or overlaps consistent
  • Secure the geotextile- pins/pegs/tape/overlap?
  • Once all correct over fill with your next base layer.

Area size length x width

Least overlap if an irregular size, fill longest side first

You want as little overlap as possible as this could give you weaker areas.
