eNatural Coir Landscaping & Erosion Control Matting – Coconut Fibre Soil Protection Fabric

Looking for a more natural alternative to traditional all-plastic landscaping fabrics?

Our Coir Matting combines natural coconut fibre with a lightweight polypropylene support mesh and stitching to create a strong, flexible landscaping fabric. With a weight of 350g/m², it provides a natural-looking protective layer that can be used for soil protection, erosion control, separation, insulation and supporting new planting.

Unlike conventional landscaping membranes manufactured primarily from plastic, the main body of this fabric is made from natural coir coconut fibre. Polypropylene top and bottom netting and polypropylene stitching are incorporated into the product to hold the natural fibres together and provide additional stability.

This means it isn't completely plastic-free, but it can provide a more natural alternative where you want the appearance and properties of coir without using a fully plastic landscaping membrane.

Why Choose Coir Matting?

Natural coconut fibre

The main blanket material is made from 100% natural coir coconut fibre, giving it a natural appearance that blends well into gardens, planted areas and landscaping projects.

A more natural alternative to plastic membranes

Traditional woven and non-woven landscaping membranes are generally manufactured from synthetic materials. Coir matting uses natural coconut fibre as its main material, supported by polypropylene netting and stitching.

It can therefore be a useful choice for projects where you want to reduce the amount of synthetic material used while still having a stable and practical landscaping fabric.

Helps protect exposed soil

Covering exposed soil can help reduce the direct impact of rainfall and surface run-off. This makes coir particularly useful on banks, slopes, newly landscaped ground and areas where vegetation is still becoming established.

Useful as a separation layer

Coir can be used as a natural-fibre separation layer in suitable landscaping applications, helping create a barrier between different materials or surfaces.

Always consider the requirements of your individual project when choosing a separation fabric, particularly where structural performance, drainage or specific filtration properties are required.

Helps support and improve soil

Coir is naturally moisture absorbent and can help create a more favourable environment at the soil surface.

As the natural fibres gradually break down over time, the coir component can contribute organic material rather than remaining indefinitely in the ground like a conventional plastic membrane.

Please remember that the supporting polypropylene mesh and stitching do not break down in the same way as the natural coir fibres.

Helps retain moisture

Coir fibres naturally absorb and hold moisture before gradually releasing it. When used over soil, this can help reduce rapid drying and provide additional protection around newly established planting.

Provides insulation and surface protection

The fibrous structure creates an additional layer between exposed soil and the surrounding environment. This can provide useful insulation and surface protection around planting and landscaped areas.

It should not, however, be considered a substitute for specialist frost protection where this is required.

Supports new planting

Coir creates a protective surface while plants and root systems become established. Openings can be cut into the fabric to allow plants to be positioned directly into the soil beneath.

Flexible

The combination of natural coir fibre, polypropylene support mesh and stitching helps the matting follow the contours of the ground while providing additional stability during handling and installation.

What Is Coir Matting Suitable For?

Coir matting is a versatile landscaping material that can be used for:

  • Soil and ground protection

  • Slopes, banks and embankments

  • Supporting new planting and vegetation

  • Moisture retention

  • Separation between landscaping materials

  • Insulation around suitable planted areas

  • Covering newly landscaped or disturbed soil

  • Garden borders and planting schemes

Great for Slopes, Banks and Erosion Control

Heavy rainfall and surface water can disturb exposed soil, particularly on slopes and newly landscaped ground.

Coir erosion control matting creates a protective covering over the soil surface while allowing water to pass through. This can help provide more stable conditions while plants and their root systems become established.

Its natural brown appearance also makes it less visually intrusive than many synthetic landscaping materials.

Available Cut Pieces & Roll Sizes

2m x 5m – 10m² Piece
Ideal for smaller garden and landscaping projects.

2m x 10m – 20m² Piece
Ideal for planting areas, borders and medium-sized landscaping projects.

2m x 50m – 100m² Roll
Best suited to larger landscaping, ground protection and erosion-control projects.

Coverage is calculated using the full dimensions of the material. Always allow additional material for overlaps, cutting and wastage where required. Thickness and appearance, coir is a natural material so ther can be some variation in fibres and density.

*The manufacturer's stated longevity relates to the erosion-control blanket and will vary depending on location, soil, water, climate and site-specific erosion conditions.

The main blanket material is natural coir coconut fibre, but polypropylene top and bottom netting and polypropylene stitching are used to hold the coir fibres together and provide stability.

Its benefit is that natural coir makes up the main body of the landscaping blanket, providing a more natural option than landscaping membranes manufactured entirely from synthetic materials.

Cutting Natural Coir Matting

Coir is a natural, fibrous material, so cut edges may fray and some loose fibres are normal, particularly when pieces are cut to size.

The polypropylene support mesh helps hold the material together, but some movement or shedding of the natural coconut fibres should still be expected.

When cutting, use sharp scissors or a suitable cutting tool and handle the cut edges carefully while positioning and securing the material.

Do I Need to Soak Coir Matting?

You don't normally need to soak the entire piece before installation.

If the coir arrives particularly dry or tightly compressed, lightly wetting it can make the fibres more flexible and easier to shape around the contours of the ground.

For larger pieces, using a garden hose as you unroll and position the material can be easier than trying to soak the whole roll.
